John J. Burlingame, 83, of Poughkeepsie, NY, died peacefully at Vassar Bros. Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on January 26, 1934, the son of George & Mary Detmer Burlingame. Following his attendance at Poughkeepsie High School he entered the US Navy and became a Veteran of the Korean War.
John married Nancy I. Wing on May 14, 1960 in St. Joseph's Church. She predeceased him on July 28, 2011. He was an Engineer for IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY and retired in 1993 after 38 years of employment.
John was member of St. Martin de Porres Church and a member of the River Rats. They were a group of friends that would meet at Waryas Park in Poughkeepsie and reminisce about the old days in Poughkeepsie. He was loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. What he enjoyed most was spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren who affectionately thought of him as Pal.
Survivors include his sons: Robert J. (Kimberly) Burlingame of Hyde Park, NY; Mark (Sarah) Burlingame of Baldwinsville, NY and sister: Barbara Dudek of Norfolk, Va. Grandchildren include: Sarah, Courtney, Philip, John Max, Bradley, Brian, Brooke, Anastasia, Rohan, Nolan and Mitchell. Great-grandchildren: Sadie, Ellison, Corrine, Christopher Cade and Appomattox and several Nieces and nephews. Luanne Burlingame of Baldswinville, NY and Penney Burlingame of Richlands, NC. He was predeceased by his son: Major John C. Burlingame, USMC and a brother: George Burlingame.
There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, January 24, 2017 at 10 AM in St. Martin de Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Entombment will follow in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery with Military Honors. Arrangements are under the direction of Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
