Arthur W. Kaiser (AKA ‘Kais’) a resident of Wappinger’s Falls, passed away on Monday December 4, 2017 at the age of 90 at home after a short illness surrounded by loved ones.
Son of the late Arthur C. Kaiser and Beatrice Short, Arthur was born April 14, 1927 in Poughkeepsie. He is predeceased by his only sibling Mary J. Booth.
Arthur attended W.W. Smith School and entered the vocational program in high school to become a tool maker. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. He was assigned to the Anti-Aircraft U.S.S. Juneau. By virtue of being assigned to the ship before it’s commissioning in Brooklyn, N.Y., he became a proud “Plank Owner”.
After an Honorable discharge he earned his GED and attended flight school to earn his private pilot’s license (single engine land) with the aid of the G.I. Bill.
He joined I.B.M. in 1948 as a milling machine operator and after 40 ½ years of dedicated service, mostly as a large system test technician, retired as a Senior Laboratory Technician. He appeared on the cover of the I.B.M.’s “About Your Company’s Benefits” booklet.
He married his high school sweetheart, Catherine (Betty) E. Conners of Poughkeepsie on January 29 1949 at St John’s Lutheran Church on Cannon St. in Poughkeepsie. She predeceased him in 2006. They had three beautiful children. Art and Betty enjoyed many activities together; bowling in mixed league, taking organ and dancing lessons, oil painting, ceramics, and traveling by land and sea and air. She assisted him in his work as a photographer, and they taught 3rd grade Sunday school together for four years.
Art took early retirement to pursue other interests such as photography of grade school student pictures. He worked for a local machine shop as a machinist/toolmaker. He built a fiberglass replica of a ’29 Mercedes Benz (from a kit) which he and his ‘Honey’ enjoyed cruising the country in. He was awarded a U.S. patent for his design for a more efficient engine.
A favorite pastime of his was making home movies with his family and friends. He would direct, operate camera and act in several epic home films. He also enjoy family reunions at Disney World at Halloween when he would dress up in great costumes. He was also a feculent contributor of Letters to the Editor of the Poughkeepsie Journal with his great words of wisdom.
Mr. Kaiser served as scoutmaster of troop nine for 9 years. He regularly attended two men’s Bible study groups and two Christ Care groups sponsored by his church. He had been a communicant of St John’s Lutheran Church since 1946.
He is survived by his three children, son Martin C. Kaiser and his wife Nancy of Charlotte, N.C., daughter Kathleen B. Peters and her husband Glenn of Hudson, NY, and daughter Cynthia E. Mullen of Wappinger’s Falls NY. His grandchildren Bambi L. Bishop and her husband Stephen, Tiffany E. McAfee and her husband Clinton, and Holly F. Ward and husband Greg. Great grandchildren Lucas R. Bishop and Calandra B Bishop. Also several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a son-in-law James T. Mullen and a grandson Christopher J. Kaiser.
He will be remembered fondly for his humor by all that knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends on Sunday December 10, 2017 from 2 to 6p.m. at Wm. G. Miller & Son F.H., Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, N.Y. 12603. A service will be held on Monday, December 11, 2017, 10am at St. John’s Lutheran Church 55 Wilbur Blvd, Poughkeepsie, NY.
