Ray, to me...

I would have liked to have spent more time with Ray. Or G-Ray (Grampa Ray) as I called him around home. It's a regret. Living in BC with he and Anne in Ontario, I did not get to spend a whole lot of time with my father in-law. Nor did his grand kids. The time I did spend with him left a deep impression on me. He made me feel like family within minutes of the first time we met - a couple decades ago. I loved his humour and his stories and his cooking! And his unique take on the world. I got to know him in his retirement years. And was lucky enough to tag along on more than one occasion - staking out discount stores and selling his wares at the flea markets (his empire included multiple locations). Even though he wasn't doing well, I'm glad we all got to spend a few days with him last summer. For me, Ray's significant talents were evidenced in his own works mixed in with his endless collections of... collectables. He was an exceptional artist who was able to make a good living at it and we will always be able to enjoy his works. Of course you can easily see Ray in his sons Joey and Paul but I also see him in his daughters. Especially, my wife, Ava. Some of the unorthodox "ways" of hers, and her artistic talents. Despite not regularly seeing him he's been a big part of my life for years, and I'm very sad that Ray is gone away. To the degree that it is a blessing for him, to have moved on, I am glad. If there's a heaven I know he's up there digging up treasures all day, cooking a gourmet meal in the afternoon and creating in the evening - while watching the Jays on TV. On the weekends he'll be selling his collections and creations to the angels (or whoever happens by).
