Obituary for Edward "Eddie" Grey Wofford

On Sunday, March 14, 2021, Edward Wofford passed away peacefully at the age of 86.
Edward was born on October 15, 1934 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to James Grey and Mildred Hammersly Wofford.
After he graduated from Van Buren High School in Van Buren, Arkansas, he joined the United States Navy. He served 4 years with an honorable discharge. He then worked for over 30 years for the Corp of Engineers until he retired. He was one of the surveyors who drew maps for the McClellen-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System prior to its construction. He had many stories to tell of his river adventures. Once he fell off of a dredge barge into the Arkansas
River and came away okay since the water happened to be only up to his waist. He enjoyed the outdoors, exploring, and fishing. He had a love for history, geography, geology and genealogy.
He liked collecting coins. At the age of 81 he became an artist and would do whimsical sketches of his everyday life. He enjoyed doing cartoon sketches of cars, planes and spaceships. Working with bright colored markers he did a series of abstract paintings. He kept up his art until his health got to fragile. In his later years he made daily trips to the Lavaca Senior Center in Lavaca, Arkansas. He enjoyed the city of Lavaca and cherished his friends there. As a teenager, Edward made a profession of faith as a believer of Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Baptist
Church of Lavaca, Arkansas.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mildred (Hammersly) Wofford, a sister, Nancy Denny and her husband, Austin and his brother in laws Charlie Weaver and Lowell Brown.

He is survived by a sister, Marijane Brown of Roland, Oklahoma, four children, four step-children, numerous grandchildren; a friend, June Hardgrave, and her family and many niece’s, nephews and cousins.

Edward will be buried in the National Cemetery of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Due to Covid no visitation or funeral will be held. Instead the family will have a private memorial at a later date at Hills Farm in Nicutt, Oklahoma.
