Donald Metheny, age 89 passed away peacefully at his home in Oklahoma City on August 16, 2020. He was born on December 27, 1930 to Douglas and Margie Metheny at Lenora, Oklahoma in Dewey County. Don attended elementary school at Rocky, Sentinel, and Bridgeport, Oklahoma, and was graduated from Hinton High School in 1949. Don was a talented athlete, and played football, baseball and basketball. In 1949 he was selected by the Daily Oklahoman as a member of the South All-State basketball team and played in the All-State game. He was offered and accepted an athletic scholarship by what was then Central State College (now UCO). During his freshman year he played, and lettered in football, basketball, and baseball, and was named the outstanding freshman athlete in 1950. The following three years he concentrated on basketball, and baseball and was twice named All Conference in basketball and was also named Outstanding Senior Athlete in 1953. In 2006, he was inducted into the University of Central Oklahoma Athletic Hall of Fame. He began his teaching and coaching career in the Oklahoma City Public School System in 1955. He served as basketball, baseball and assistant football coach and athletic director at U.S. Grant and Capitol Hill High Schools for thirty- five years, retiring in 1990. Don served his country in U.S. Army during the Korean War. Coach Metheny influenced and inspired many students and athletes throughout his career. A fierce competitor, Don was beloved by his students, fellow coaches, friends and family. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita, his son Alan Boyd and thirteen siblings. He is survived by his wife Betty of Oklahoma City, daughter Nikki Metheny Hill, son in law Skip Hill and two grandchildren, Jake Hill and Jordan Hill all of Tifton, Georgia, step children and grandchildren, Clark Williams, Mark Williams of Oklahoma City and Jon Williams of Salt Lake City, Colton Williams, Morgan Williams of Oklahoma City and Megan Morin of Salt Lake City.
