It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Maria Ivonia Sousa at home on May 21, 2020, with her family by her side in her 91st year. Beloved wife of Aristides. Cherished mother of (D) Aristides Sousa, AnaBela Sousa and Mario (Svitlana) Sousa. Loving grandmother of Claudia (Eugenio) Bizzarro, Michael (Rosa) Monteiro, Sergio Sousa and Andrea Sousa. Survived by her sister Halia ((D) Jose) Gamboa, sisters/brother-in-law, Natercia ((D) Herminio) Rodrigues, Eulalia ((D) Manuel) Monico, and Eduino ((D) Helia) Moniz. Predeceased by her siblings and siblings-in-law: Natalia (Fernando) Rebelo, Fernando (Luisa) Soeiro, Paulo (Benildes) Soeiro, Manuel (Stela) Soeiro. Survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends in Canada, Portugal, Brasil and the United States of America. In her younger years, Maria Ivonia was a mezzo soprano. Maria was a soloist and chorister at the inauguration of the Teatro Micaelense in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, Azores on the 31st of March of 1951. She will be lovingly remembered for her singing and love of opera and classical music. She was a loving and devoted house wife and enjoyed creative arts, crafting (painting, jewelry making, sewing), cooking and baking. Maria always put others before herself. She was a gentle free spirit with a big heart. She touched the lives of so many and the love people felt for her is immeasurable. To the doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals and staff who each and collectively showed extreme care and compassion; your dedication, commitment and courage deserve our deepest gratitude and admiration. Visitation will be held at P.X. DERMODY FUNERAL HOMES, 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) on Sunday, May 24, 2020 from 10AM – 3PM. Internment will take place on Monday, May 25, 2020 at 10AM at Mount Hamilton Cemetery, 260 Rymal Rd E. At this time, there will be no formal Funeral Service.
