Obituary for Mary Elizabeth Theobald (Redner)

Mary Elizabeth Theobald (Redner)

Mary Elizabeth Theobald (nee Redner) passed away in her 93rd year at Belleville General Hospital, Belleville, Ontario on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Her heart may have unexpectedly failed but in all of Mary’s long life, it beat fervently with love, compassion and hope. As highly respected matriarch of her family, Mary set a high bar for mothers and grandmothers alike.

Mary was the last of her branch of the prominent UEL Redners. The original pioneer was Henry (Sr.) Ridenor who first settled the Rednersville area of Prince Edward County in the 1790s and through Mary’s line, the Redners became well-known farmers, carpenters, ferrymen, sailors, doctors and railroaders in and around Belleville.

Born September 30, 1926 in Belleville, Ontario, Mary was married to Gordon James Theobald for 63 years. Their wedding ceremony took place on April 5, 1946 at Christ Church Anglican, Belleville. Mary is survived by sons: Clark Ian Theobald (Elizabeth), Robert Gordon Theobald (Sandra), David James Theobald; grandchildren: Bridget, Barbara (Brant), Ian (Pamella); Nicole (Tim), John, James, David (Tracy), Melinda; Matthew (Holly) and Amy; great-grandchildren Hailey, Nathan, Emma; Saphira, Keelan, Keesha, Nola, Dylan, Jovaun, Kaylee, Jessie; great/great grandchildren Quinn, Kiowa, Nova, Hazel; and sister-in-law Barbara Bertrim. Predeceased by parents Robert and Mabel Redner, brother John Redner and sister Dorice Redner.

In the Belleville area, she is greatly missed by the Taylor family- niece Christina, and nephews James and Gordon; grand-nieces Ryan, Jennifer and Katie Taylor. Much loved by the Bertrim family nieces Debbie (George), Donna (Bryan), Janice, (Jim), Dyanne (Patrick) and nephew Keith (Helen); grand nephew Christopher and grand-nieces Michelle and Richelle. Numerous Theobald relations are scattered across Canada and around the World.

After a married life spent mostly out of military PMQs, Mary and Gord built their own home in the 1970s near Plevna, Ontario- “Stoney Lonesome.” For nearly thirty years, the cottage was not only a home for Mary and Gord but a gathering place for wondrous year-round family events and vacations.
Mary’s ashes will be placed with Gord’s both on this property and in the Redner family plot at the Belleville Cemetery at a date to be determined.
As per Mary’s wishes, there will be no service or visitation. As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Arrangements in the care of Belleville Funeral Home and Chapel, 68 North Front Street, Belleville (613-968-5080). Online donations and memories can be shared at www.rushnellfamilyservices.com
