Obituary for David Craig Wright

DAVID CRAIG WRIGHT
June 27, 1930 ~ February 23, 2019

David Craig Wright was born in Columbus, Ohio on June 27, 1930 to Elizabeth Craig Wright and David Bradford Wright. He died on February 23, 2019 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Elizabeth Broach Wright, son Kevin Craig Wright and his wife Linda, and daughter Melissa Gay Wright Jenson and her husband Paul. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Danielle, (Mrs. James Murray) , Taylor Wright, John Wright, Mark Wright and Jeff Wright. He is survived also by three great-grandsons, Wyatt, Collin and Elias Murray.
When Craig was born, Elizabeth and Dave lived in Tampa, Florida and they returned to Tampa with their infant son and his older sister, Joann.
Craig lived his first five years in Florida before his family moved to Atlanta, Georgia where his father was the athletic director for the Georgia Military Academy located in the south part of Atlanta near the present Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Craig’s memories of life as a small boy on the school campus were very good. The family spent summers at Camp Highland Lake in North Carolina where his memories were even better. Later the family moved to Memphis, Tennessee for two years, returning to Atlanta in 1944.
Craig spent his entire childhood and teen years doing the thing he loved best, sports, both participating and watching. He talked so much about those years, and one summer when his first three grandchildren were quite small, a family reunion was held at Camp Highland Lake.
Craig graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta in 1947 and attended Emory University in Atlanta. He graduated from Emory with a bachelors and masters degrees in geology. He always liked telling people that he rode his bike further to high school than he did to college. His family lived in between the two places. He had a paper route that took him around the area as a teenager, again on his bike.
Immediately upon graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served for two years aboard the USS New Jersey during the Korean war.
Upon discharge from the Navy Craig went to work for Sohio Petroleum. He spent six months on the Sohio training program. When that program took him to Montana it was the first time he had ever been West of the Mississippi River. His love of the mountains and the history of the Western United States began there and stayed with him the rest of his life.
Craig worked for Sohio for five years in the company’s office in downtown Oklahoma City. During that time he met Elizabeth Anna Broach who lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They were married on April 2, 1957. Craig and Liz lived in Oklahoma City where they raised their two children, KC and Gay.
When Craig left Sohio he worked the rest of his life as an Independent Geologist, making many good friends in the business over the years and providing for his family.
Craig loved sports and played golf for many years. Early in his life he enjoyed baseball, especially the Cincinnati Reds. Later he became interested in football, although he did not have a college team to support. It took several years for him to finally become an Oklahoma Sooner fan. He loved history and made several trips with groups studying the U.S. Civil War. He enjoyed visiting old military forts associated with the history of the American West.
Craig always found the very best in people, had many friends made over a lifetime and spent his entire life caring for his family. The earth was a better place when Craig was here.
