Obituary for Mattie Burgess

Mattie Bell (Bunn) Burgess, of Toledo, Ohio was born on September 16, 1937 in Pushmataha, Alabama in Choctaw County to the Holy Union of Ned and Nellie Bunn. After a brief illness, she departed this life on Sunday, January 27, 2019 at the age of 81 at Hospice of Northwestern Ohio, in Toledo, Ohio.

Sister Burgess gave her life to Christ many, many years ago. She was a devout, faithful Missionary and Servant until she was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She served on the Board of Trustees and as a Nurse at the Body of Christ where she was a vested member for many years. Sister Burgess was truly a woman of God and served on numerous mission fields, ranging from Toledo, Ohio to the Republic of Haiti. She possessed exquisite culinary skills, having worked at some of the finest restaurants in Toledo. She retired as a Chef from Mancy’s Steakhouse Restaurant. She was passionate about her service to Christ, enjoyed fishing, gardening, and loved hosting family bbq’s and cook-outs. In her later years, she devoted her life to ministering to all who entered her home with one goal in mind, “leading others to Christ Jesus.” She attended college in Alabama but was most proud of her accomplishment for the Lord; a graduate of Moody Bible Institute in 2000 where she earned her certificate/degree in Theology.

She leaves to cherish her memory, daughter LaKendra Burgess, brother Ned D. Bunn, Jr., sisters Beatrice Foster, Sallie Cleo Washington (Charles) and Faye M. Ward and a host of loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eagle Burgess and beloved son Charles Elbert Burgess, beloved daughter Joan Kwan Burgess, parents Ned and Nellie Bunn, brothers Thomas, Vivian and Howard, sisters Nelliewese and Eunice Lee Bunn.
