Obituary for Rosie Lee Turner

Our beloved mother Rosie Lee Scott “Moma” was born September 4, 1941 in Malvina, Mississippi to the union of Mr. Willie “Minana” and Mrs. Geneva “Mudea” Scott, and passed into eternal rest on January 15, 2019. Moma was a very kind, gentle and loving soul; most of all she loved the Lord.
Moma, “Tookie” as she was nicknamed as a child, was the third of thirteen children. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at a tender age and was baptized at Saint Peter’s Church in Symonds, Mississippi where she remained a member until 1973; when she left for Toledo to be closer to her parents who had moved north months earlier. Moma loved to sing and sang in the choir at Saint Peter’s.
After moving to Toledo, Moma joined Mt Nebo Baptist Church and later attended Phillips Temple, where she served on the nurse’s guild. At the time of her passing Moma was a member of Northwestern Missionary Baptist Church.
Moma married LG Green in 1958 and they made their home in Rosedale, MS. He preceded her in death in 2003.
Prior to leaving Rosedale, Moma worked in retail sales. Upon arriving in Toledo, she worked as a nursing aid at the Granger Group Home. Moma last worked at the Medical College of Ohio in the Department of Environmental Services.
In 1998 Moma married Mr Nathaniel Turner and they enjoyed over 20 years together, until she became ill in 2016 and went to live with our brother Dwight and his wife Laura; who served as her primary caregivers until her passing.
Family was very important to Moma and we knew that her love was unconditional. We remember Moma working two jobs, and our older brothers Leon and Chester being excited when they were old enough to go to work to help her pay bills. Moma would sit down and write out the monthly budget while we gathered at the table playing. Then when she was done we would listen intently as she read off where every dime would be spent.
Moma shared a special bond with us. We cherish the memories of her playing hopscotch with us on chalk drawn boxes on the sidewalk on Vermont Street; sitting together at home laughing, talking and cracking jokes on each other; and playing softball with the whole family on Sunday afternoons. We remember our grandfather “Minana” running around the bases as we all cheered him.
We also cherish the memory of the many fishing trips that Moma took us on; where car loads of family would gather to go fishing with our grandparents, Minana and Mudea, in the 1970’s. We’d fish for endless hours - then go home and clean, cook and eat our catch. We continued fishing with Moma through the 2018 fishing season. These were enduring moments that will last forever in our hearts.
Moma was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Leon Green and Chester Green; brothers, Willie Scott, Jr., James Scott and Jesse Scott; grandchildren, Sherrell, Latricia, Chestin and Dana.
Left to cherish Moma’s precious memory are her husband Mr. Nathaniel Turner; children Joyce Green, Patricia Jones, Willie (Robin) Green, Etta Colleen (Savon) Ewing, Letishia Green and Dwight (Laura) Green; Siblings, Edna Dennis, Larry (Izena) Scott, L C Scott, Doris (Sam) Lewis, Barbara Scott, Letishia Taylor, Luredean (Leonard) Ham, Kenneth Scott and Michael Scott; Sister in Law, Augustine Scott; Daughter-in-law Rosie Taylor Green; 22 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; and a host of other loving family and friends.
