Obituary for Betty Jo Schumann (Young)

Betty Jo (Young) Schumann, 89, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 27, 2018.
Betty was born in Charleston, West Virginia on December 6, 1929 the third child and only daughter of Otmer M. and Thelma B. Young. After graduating from Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston, WV, Betty attended and graduated from Boston University, Sargent College in 1951, with a degree in Physical Education.
On March 17, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Schumann. During their marriage of 54 years they had three children. First was David Robert, next came Rebecca Jo and then Donna Rae. They moved their young family to Oklahoma for a new opportunity in 1964. At this point, Betty returned to her career as Physical Education teacher, where she diligently taught her own children and others to respect and care for their bodies through proper nutrition, healthcare and exercise. In addition, she took on leadership of the Putnam City chapter of Association of Classroom Teachers, serving as president. In this role she courageously negotiated for teacher benefits. She earned a master’s degree in counseling from University of Central Oklahoma and supervised student teachers in the UCO Education department during her retirement.
Betty treasured her children and extended family and enjoyed spending time with them. She had a love of the outdoors, which took her on many adventures across the United States, as well as across the pond. She was an avid bird watcher and shared a wealth of knowledge with all who were interested. Many weekends were spent at “The Lake”, where she enjoyed the beauty of this world in all its aspects. Her love of the game was evident throughout her life with membership in a variety of clubs and organizations where she gathered with friends to partake in a game of bridge, tennis, or golf, which she enjoyed into her late seventies.
She lived with joy each day sharing the light from within through her service to others, showing love and kindness to all she met. Betty remained devoted and faithful to her Lord until he called her home.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents (Ott and Thelma), her husband (Bob), and her two older brothers, Charles L. Young and Edward H. Young.
She leaves cherished memories with her son, David and wife Kathy, her daughters, Rebecca Cretney and Donna Pace, her granddaughters Stacy Schumann , Jessica Schumann and Jennifer Cretney, grandsons, Gregory Pace and wife Stephanie and William Pace and wife Hanieh, great-grandchildren Jameson, Savannah, Harrison, Cassidy and John William Pace, and many nephews and nieces.
Thank you to the staff of Dorset Place and Physicians Choice Hospice Care for their continuous compassionate care for our mother.
