Obituary for Robert Henry Shultz Jr.

SHULTZ, Robert H. Jr., LTC, of Irvington passed away on November 16, 2018 at the age of 88. Bob was born, raised, and received his secondary education in Richmond, prior to attending VA Tech, where he received a BSME with honors in 1952. He served 24 years in the Army Corps of Engineers, including tours in both Korea and Vietnam. Bob received his MS in Nuclear Engineering at NC State in Raleigh, where he met his wife of 60 years, Barbara McKeithan Shultz. Their son John, of New York City, was born while he was commanding the world’s only floating nuclear power plant, the Sturgis, while it was powering the Panama Canal. After retiring from the Army, Bob returned to Richmond to become Director of Environmental Engineering at then VA Power Company, before pursuing ventures in the solar and alternative energy fields. Barbara and he moved to Reedville in the early ‘80’s, restoring a home in the Historic District and becoming involved with the Fisherman’s Museum and St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Kilmarnock. He sailed the Chesapeake and the Caribbean around St. Thomas, USVI, where they maintained a second home. For the last 17 years they have led active lives at Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury. He is survived by his wife, son and grandson Benjamin. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews at 2:00pm on Friday, November 30th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Andrews Endowment for Benevolences.
