Obituary for Phyllis Anne Fletcher (McCown)
On January 31, 1934 at 2:40 pm the eldest daughter of Walter R. and Cleora O. McCown named Phyllis Anne “Sweetie” was born. Sweetie departed this earth to be with her Heavenly Father on November 30, 2018. Sweetie attended Toledo Public and Parochial schools and graduated from Jesup W. Scott High school in 1952. She obtained her licensure as an LPN in 1954. With continued education she received her certificate in Pharmacology and IV administration through St. Charles Hospital.
Sweetie worked for St. Vincent’s Medical Center for 18 years. She continued her employment at Unicast as an Industrial Nurse while also working part-time at St Vincent’s Drug and Alcohol unit. Prior to this she was a nurse for many years at the Child Study Institute (CSI). Sweetie retired in 1992 from Toledo Hospital’s Talbert Center but her love for nursing drew her back to helping others for 8 years as a Staff Nurse at Compass Inc.
Sweetie was a devoted member of Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Duane C. Tisdale.
In 1954 she married the love of her life, Richard Fletcher Jr. and together they had eight children who dearly loved them.
Sweetie was an avid bowler who also enjoyed arts and crafts and baking for her family. She was often praised for and received many requests for her outstanding peach cobblers and German chocolate cakes. But more than anything Sweetie is remembered as a loving caregiver. It was in her heart to care for family and friends and all those in need until she was unable to do so. Because of her warmth and loyalty towards everyone she was greatly loved by ALL who knew her.
Sweetie was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Alice Mae McCown and Mary Ellen Tisdale, and her beloved husband of 23 years, Richard.
Left to cherish her memory are: sons Michael (Elaine), and Kevin (Cassandra); daughters Brenda, Anna Gail, Carole (Michael), Richelle, Karen (Ricky), and Corey (Sean). Also many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; her only surviving sister Vera J. Reed, Uncle Richard McCown (Jacqueline); a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and longtime friend Robert “Bob” Ellis and his sons.
